Santra Ametra Wilson ( Sandy) entered this life on July 24, 1944 to Anderson Thomas Pitts ( deceased) and Bertha Mae Wilson. Santra departed to be with her eternal father on Tuesday October 13, 2020 after an extended illness.
Sandy received her early education in the Winston-Salem / Forsyth County School System. After high school, she moved to NYC to join her sister Marian where they both strived to be successful young women. She went on to pursue higher education and training at Queen's College.
Sandy was a quiet and spiritual person . Her early training and relationship with God was developed at the Shiloh Baptist Church of Winston Salem , NC.
Sandy was employed for over thirty years at the New Rochelle Hospital in the Medical Records department. Prior to this she was employed at the Famous New York Bloomingdales Department Store. One of her greatest interest and talent was designing and making clothing for herself and sisters . Another passion of Sandy was cooking and baking. This was how she share her love for others through cooking and baking. She was frequently sought after by her neighbors and co-workers for her famous carrot cakes and coconut pies.
Even during her illness she continued to share her love for cooking and gardening with her family and friends.
She was an avid collector often searching for historical books authored by Black Americans; she had a plethora of cook books and antiques. Living in New York provided her with a great opportunity to enjoy her love for the Theater and Arts.
She leaves to Cherish her beloved son Michael Leonard Wilson SR, her dear ninety -four year old mother Bertha Mae Wilson ; six sisters , Marian Wilson , Geraldine Garbutt, Veronica Hedrick of Winston Salem , Priscilla Garrett of California and Gloria Foxworth of Patterson, NJ , one Brother Larry Wilson, (Gail ) of Winston Salem NC; all of whom she loved dearly. She has many fond memories of her seven grandchildren; Melissa Akerson, Kirby Pagon, Lavon Wilson, Michael JR Wilson , Jeremiah Wilson, Isaiah Wilson, Aijalon Wilson and a host of great grands , nephews , nieces, cousins and many relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by three sisters Maxine Gibbs , Gwendolyn Lynch and Doris Bines. A public viewing will be held Thursday, October 22, 2020 from 1pm until 5pm at Douthit's. A private service will be held on Friday October 23, 2020 and interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are in the care of Douthit Funeral Services.
