Obituary

Mr. Gilbert Raynard McRae, Sr., was born on March 14,1960 in Winston-Salem, N.C. as the 5th born child to the late Mr. and Mrs. Angus and Eleanor McRae. He was raised in Winston-Salem, NC and grew up in the Eaton Community.
He attended the Winston-Salem, Forsyth County Public Schools. As an outstanding high school athlete in football, basketball and track he earned the nick- name sweet feet. Upon HS graduation, Gilbert enlisted in the United States Marine Corp (USMC) in June 1978. He served and completed his military duties where he received decorations of service, The Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and Rifle Sharpshooter Badge. He came back home as a proud veteran of the USMC in which he received a Honorable Discharge with a Good Conduct Metal in June 1982.
Gilbert worked for the beautiful city of Winston- Salem, NC where his interest grew in the area of horti- culture. If you knew him you know that he loved a beautiful yard. He worked there until his health would not permit him to continue. Thereupon he retired from the City of Winston-Salem, NC
Despite all his setbacks and challenges that he faced in this life he still managed to find a way to serve and to help others.
Gilbert served his Easton Community; giving those who had no place to call home a home. Giving those that had no food to eat food to eat. Gilbert knew how to give those that had no hope...hope for a tomorrow.
Gilbert "Uncle Notty" was not short on smiles, hugs, and laughter. As a loving father, he loved like no other and he leaves to cherish his memories; One Son, Gil- bert Raynard McRae, Jr. two Daughters; LaShaunda Becoat, Argula McRae ,all of Winston-Salem, NC; his siblings Virginia Martin, Elizabeth McCummings, James Otis McRae (Proceeded him in death), and Vanessa McRae; one Uncle Jerome Wade of Brook- lyn, NY; grandchildren Gilbrielle McRae, Shanara Becoat, Imani Becoat, Anaria Becoat, and Raya Becoat -Cooper; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. He cherished his family and close friends. A public viewing will be held Friday October 28, 2022, from 1pm until 5pm at Douthit's, Funeral services will be held Saturday October 29, 2022, at 11:00 am from Douthit's. The family will receive friends at 10:30 am. Arrangements are in the care of Douthit Funeral Services.
