Obituary

Albert Lorenzo Smith (Al) 65 of Winston-Salem, NC, passed away on February 22, 2024, at home surrounded by family after a courageous battle with colon cancer. He was born on January 26, 1959, to Doretha and Albert Smith who preceded him in death.
He was a 1978 graduate of Parkland High School, later joining the Army Reserve and attended Forsyth Technical Community College. He was fondly known as the Grill Master and could often be found on the grill or in the kitchen cooking one of his outstanding meals as he would say 'that's some good eating'. He was a man of many talents; carpenter, roofer, barber, cook, gardener, landscaper, care giver (moving to Raleigh to help take care of his great nephew and niece-Jemelle and Jalonta).
A viewing will be held on Friday, March 1, 2024, from 1pm to 5pm at Douthit Funeral Home. A celebration of life (cookout) will be held at a later date.
He is survived by his siblings; Kenneth, Ronald (Detricha), Arlene, Carolyn, Jo Ann, Patty (Joseph), his beloved nieces and nephews, Sonya (Moses), Carolyn, Montea' (Rickita), Lester, Keith, Deshawnte, John-morro Natasha (Tyrone), Leslie, Sheree (Abrein), great nieces and nephews, and Cousin James Brown.
The family would like to especially thank our sister Joann and first cousin Oscar Brown for all the care, support and love provided doing his illness. The family would also like to thank Paulette Leak, Kevin Douthit, Bernell Mickens, Pamela Cesear, Ronald Rice and lifelong friends, Richard Shaw, Alvin Robinson, Melvin Massey, Richard Landrum and family, Maxine Hicks and family, Pernell Douglas, Kevin Vaughan, Kelvin and Kenneth Green and other friends, also the Atrium Cancer Center and Hospice for their compassionate care.
In Al's honor, everyone, please go get your age-related annual check-ups, even when you don't want to. Ask questions, talk to your family and friends about tests they are having, that one of you may need as you get older and most of all listen to your body.
To Al, although we may be saying farewell for now, we will never forget the special place you have in our lives. Rest in peace our dear brother, we will continue to honor your memory by living our lives to the fullest. Love you!! A public viewing will be held Friday March 1, 2024, from 1pm until 5pm at Douthit's.
