Alta Marie Carter was born on July 24, 1931 and lived a life full of laughter and love before she passed away on April 28, 2021. She was a native of Tobaccoville, NC then later moved to Brooklyn, NY where she lived for over thirty years. Thereafter, she moved back to Winston-Salem, NC. Alta Carter worked as a house cleaner while in Brooklyn then as an employee at Mothers' & Daughters' store in Winston-Salem for over ten years. Her church home was Freedom Baptist Church where she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior in 1988. As a hobby, she liked to play the game, Pokeno, and was a Pick 3 genius. Her routine for each day led to her winning at least twice a week with the system she created. Alta loved her family dearly and was always ready to cook a meal to make those who enjoyed her cooking smile. Alta Carter was preceded in death by her parents, Lummie Speas Hauser and Wiley A. Hauser, her husband Henry Carter, as well as twelve brothers and sisters. She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Margaret Hauser Hickman (Billy), her stepdaughter, Karen Torrence, and her sister, Mattie Glenn; five grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and eight great-great grandchildren, with one on the way; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends. A public viewing will be held Tuesday, May 4, 2021 from 1pm until 5pm at Douthit's. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, May 5, 2021 at 12:00pm from the Freedom Baptist Church and interment will follow in Center Grove A.M.E Zion Church in Tocbaccoville, NC.
