Obituary

Sister Annie Mae Covington Toland was born the eleventh child of 12 to the late Raymond and Emma McNeely Covington on November 8, 1944, in Forsyth County, North Carolina. She transitioned from labor to reward peacefully on September 5, 2022.

Annie attended Carver School until her family moved to Mt Airy, North Carolina where she and three of her siblings attended school in Patrick County, Va. After moving back to Winston-Salem, Annie graduated from Atkins High School.

She was employed as an assistant child therapist at the Child Guidance Program in Winston-Salem until the program was dissolved by lack of funding. She mentored young girls while being a volunteer with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program. Annie retired from the Forsyth County School System after working in the food service department.

She met her life's love, Jefferson (Jeff) Toland and on November 3, 1979, they were united in Holy Matrimony. She was a faithful wife, a loving stepmother and an affectionate step-grandmother.

Annie was saved and filled with the Holy Ghost at an early age and spent her early years helping her family in ministry. Along with her siblings, she was a member of Shining Light Holiness Church where her mother, The Reverend Emma Covington was the Pastor. She sang in the choir and also traveled with her Mother's Prayer Band from house to house.

Sister Annie joined Power House of Deliverance Church under the pastorate of her brother, Bishop J H Covington in 1968. She was instrumental in building the ministry by working in many areas. Sister Annie joined the Missionary Auxiliary under President, Minister Dottie B. Blackmon and was faithful to the circle throughout several transitions. Her passion was sphere heading the Arts and Crafts Department during the National Missionaries and Women's Conventions.

She was also faithful to the Sunday School Auxiliary being a teacher of the children's class. After the death of the Founder, Sister Annie remained committed to the ministry under the pastorate of Bishop W L Washington.

As a missionary Sister Annie demonstrated the "Gift of Helps" within and outside of the church. She was a faithful caregiver for her sister, Elder Rena Pannell during an extended illness providing an anointed atmosphere and Godly service.

In addition to her parents, Sister Annie was preceded in death by four brothers: Bishop JH Covington, Elder Walter I Covington, Joseph Covington and Pleas Covington, seven sisters: Evangelist Juanita C. Simmons, Elder Rena C. Pannell, Reverend Mary B. Covington, Odessa C. Hardeman, Emma C. George, Martha C. Oakes and Ella Jean C. Moore.

Cherished memories will be shared by her husband of 42 years, Jeff Toland of the home, step-children: Phyllis Cheek and Keevin Sturdivant, (4) grandchildren: Chavez (Carbellea) Cheek of Fayetteville, NC, Chantila Cheek of Kernersville, NC, Keeshauna and Omarion Sturdivant, (5) great-grandchildren: Tayshaun and Tyra Cheek, Chaysian and Cai'On Rorie and Gail Goldsmith, one brother-in-law: Gary Toland of Newberry, SC, one sister-in law: Alenia Sligh and a host of very caring nieces, nephews, cousins, The Power House of Deliverance Garden Cathedral Family and friends. A public viewing will be held Sunday September 11, 2022, from 1pm until 5pm at Douthit's. Funeral services will be held Monday September 12, 2022, at 12pm from Powerhouse of Deliverance and interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at 11:30am at the church. Arrangements are in the care of Douthit Funeral Services.
