- THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF GOD’S SERVANT With solemn reverence and in humble submission to the sovereign will of Almighty God we announce the earthly transition of His faithful servant, Apostle Dr. Sylvester Davis Johnson. Having labored long and faithfully in the vineyard of the Lord, he has now entered into eternal rest, receiving the blessed commendation of the Master: “Well done, thou good and faithful servant… enter thou into the joy of thy Lord. ”Apostle Johnson’s life was a sacred offering—poured out in unwavering devotion to Christ and His Church. Endowed with apostolic vision, pastoral grace, and spiritual authority, he stood as a watchman upon the walls of Zion, faithfully proclaiming the Gospel and shepherding the people of God with wisdom, humility, and strength. As a preacher, teacher, musician, and author of international renown, he was entrusted with the care of souls and the stewardship of sacred truth, nurturing generations within the Body of Christ.
- He was born into a consecrated lineage of faith as the son of the late Bishop William Monroe Johnson and Mother Marie Davis Johnson. From his youth, he was formed within the life of the Church, embracing the faith at the age of ten and committing himself to the lifelong discipline of discipleship. The spiritual foundation laid in his formative years would give rise to a ministry that's panned decades and transcended borders of more than fifty years, Apostle Johnson served as the faithful under-shepherd of Macedonia Worship Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, succeeding his father and continuing a sacred apostolic lineage. Under his episcopal leadership, the ministry flourished as a beacon of light, healing, and holiness—anchored in truth and sustained by prayer. His pastoral care extended beyond the sanctuary, reaching into the lives of those he counseled, covered, and guided with compassion and discernment. In the fullness of his apostolic calling, he established the True Vine Churches of Deliverance International in 1997, serving as its Most Apostolic Primate and Establishmentarian. In this sacred trust, he provided spiritual oversight, doctrinal guardianship, and apostolic covering to a fellowship of ministries across the nation and abroad. As Jurisdictional Presiding Prelate of the Greater Memorial Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction, he upheld the dignity, order, and sacred traditions of the Church with integrity and fidelity.
- His ministry extended beyond ecclesial boundaries into the life of the community, where he labored as a servant-leader committed to justice, education, and the common good. Through his service on numerous boards and initiatives—including the Shaw University CAPE Board, The Baptist Ministers Conference and Associates, the Ministerial Coalition of Forsyth County, the Metropolitan YMCA, the Forsyth Prison Chaplaincy, and the Voter Education Project—he embodied the Gospel not only in word, but in deed. A man of disciplined intellect and sacred learning, Apostle Johnson earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina A&T State University and later a Master of Divinity from Miller University. In recognition of his profound contributions to the Church and society, he was conferred with honorary distinctions, including the Doctor of Divinity and the Doctor of Living Letters. His life and leadership were further acknowledged through his inclusion in the National Register’s Who in Executives and Professionals. Consecrated to the offices of the Church, he was ordained as an Elder in 1969 and elevated to the Episcopate in 1975.
- Through these sacred appointments, he remained steadfast in preserving apostolic doctrine, advancing the mission of the kingdom, and strengthening the household of faith. Apostle Johnson was also a prolific author and spiritual voice, whose writings—The Personality of Jesus Christ as Glorifying the Sovereignty of God, The Manifestation of the Holy Ghost through Power, A Miracle Out of A Mess, and A Matter of the Heart… From the Soul of the Apostle/Preacher—continue to edify the Church and bear witness to the depth of his theological insight. In the sacred covenant of marriage, he shared thirty-seven years with the late Lady Gwendolyn Darnell McQueen Johnson. In 2004, he entered into holy matrimony with Lady Billie Janette Mason Johnson, a faithful companion and co-laborer who stood with him in life and ministry.
- From these sacred unions and through the blessings of family, he leaves to cherish his memory his beloved children: Bishop Todd Lamont Fulton (Judith), Dr. Faith Darby (Donald), Keith Johnson (Brynn), Terron McCall, Kennethia Marie Mason, and Deacon Leon Jerome Moore, his spiritual son and caregiver. He was preceded in death by his beloved siblings: Monroe Johnson, William Johnson, Bishop Alberta Johnson Stancil, Elder Daniel Johnson, Elijah Johnson, Edward Johnson, AlphonsoJohnson, Robert Johnson, Overseer Angeline Johnson Gardner, and his daughter, the late Sylvetta Johnson, who has now joined the great cloud of witnesses. He also leaves to cherish his memory his beloved mother-in-love, Ms. Annie Mason; his brothers-in-love, Apostle Raymond H. Gardner, Apostle Dr. Willie G. Stevens, and Billie Mason, IV; and his sisters-in-love, Lady Sharon Stevens, Vanessa Leak, and Lindsey Mason. Along with a host of grandchildren, extended family, cherished loved ones, and a multitude of spiritual sons and daughters, his life’s imprint remains a living testimony of faith, leadership, and enduring love. We give thanks to Almighty God for the life and witness of His servant. Though we mourn his passing, we do not sorrow as those without hope, for we are assured that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.”
