Deacon Thomas Thornton, age 92, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, passed away on Monday, November 22, 2021. He was born March 22, 1929 in Leesville, South Carolina to Lula B Thornton. He attended the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools and graduated from Winston Salem Teacher's College. He was a retired educator in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School system. Deacon Thornton was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church where he served as church treasurer for many years and was a deacon and trustee, in addition to participating in the Senior Choir, Sunday School. Layman's ministry and the Forsyth County Deacon's Union. Mr. Thornton was a proud member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He was also an avid golfer and a former driver for Meals on Wheels America He was proceeded in death by his wife of 66 years, Doris Thornton. Left to cherish his memory, his son, Stephen Thornton of Winston Salem; a sister, Virginia Wilkes of Bridgeport, CT, and a host of other family and friends. A public viewing will be held Tuesday, November 30, 2021 from 1pm until 5pm at Douthit's. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 1, 2021 at 12pm from New Bethel Baptist Church and interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends at 11:30am.
