Obituary

Dorothy Jean Norwood, MD
Proverbs 31:28, KJV… "Her children arise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises, saying: "Many daughters have done worthily, but thou excel them all."
Dorothy Jean Norwood peacefully closed her eyes and entered Heaven's gates, surrounded by her husband of 40 years Albert Nickerson and family. Their love began at Wayne State University and to this Union was born Aisha Norwood Nickerson (Deceased), and Albert Rashawn Nickerson. Dorothy and Albert were blessed to raise their grandchildren, Ashyia Nickerson and Jason Nickerson, all of this city. Dorothy was loved by her mother-in-law, Leatrice Foster of Pontiac, Michigan; her sister-law, Mary Nickerson of St. Louis, Missouri; her brother-in-law Tony Foster, Fort Worth, Texas.
Dorothy was born to Ruby Lyons and John Dossie Norwood on June 4, 1951. Dorothy adored her siblings; Dianne Norwood, Shirley Norwood (Deceased), Linda Norwood (Deceased), Cynthia Norwood-Skinner and John Norwood, Jr. (Claudette). Dorothy was forever present and loving to her nieces and nephews, Pastor Camilla Washington (Barry); Mia Kimbrough Elliott, Rahim Skinner (Addea), Derek Worthy (Deceased), Justin Skinner; Eric Hairston, Brie McCullough, Rodney Williams (Katelyn), Joseph Elliott, Ayah Skinner, Juliette Joy Williams, as well as her extended family.
Dorothy and her husband, Albert, joined and accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior at Riverside Church with Dr. James Forbes in New York City.
Dorothy attended the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, graduating from North Forsyth High School in 1969. She along with one other black student, were pulled from regular classes to attend advanced classes at Reynolds High School. Dorothy selected Wayne State University to matriculate her studies and continued at Wayne State University School Of Medicine where she and her roommate, Marsha Rappley, began a 50-year friendship Marsha traveled from California to share at Dorothy's bedside, giving their goodbyes, until they meet again.
Dorothy worked at Baptist Hospital (Aegis Health) here in Winston-Salem prior to relocating to the Veteran Administration of Brooklyn, NY, where she worked for 30 years. Upon returning to Winston-Salem, Dorothy worked at Bethany for a few years until she returned to work at the Veteran's Administration in Kernersville.
Dorothy enjoyed many travels with friends and family. Those memories will forever bring a smile to all our faces. She was a master chef, even as a child. Dorothy recently began gardening and became quite the master gardener, growing vegetables and flowers. There are so many attributes, but the one she is known for throughout her professional career, as well as to everyone she met, is the love of Christ she unselfishly poured on all of us.
Until we meet again…we are thankful for her beautiful soul, which she so unselfishly bestowed upon those she met. Always giving more as our Lord said, "nevertheless".
