Obituary

Mrs. Dorothy Arnice Penn was called home on June 17, 2021. She was a graduate of Atkins High School class of 1959. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl M. Penn, her mother, Alice Fostina Phillips, her father Hubert Johnston, her only brother, Donald Phillips and her aunt, Maven P. Galloway, who raised her and her brother as her own. She is survived by her four children; Evangelist Pamela L. Phillips, Diedra Carter-Dodd (Roland, deceased), Rosalyn Covington (Kevin) and Morey J. Penn. Seven grandchildren; Keisha Bailey (Brent), Bryant White, Tia Carter, Carl Carter, Talaya Carter, Nikia Arnice Carter, Joseph Dodd and a host of great grandchildren, cousins and other relatives.

A life well lived. She was always the life of any event with her vibrant personality. She was a friend to the friendless and never met a stranger. She was always well dressed and was a trendsetter in fashion all of her life.

She was loved by all who knew her. Heaven will never be the same with her there. In her employed life, she enjoyed working for the NYC Port Authority. She also was a beacon of light at the Chesapeake and Potomac Phone Co., and Woodward & Lothrop's Department Store. Her most beloved role however, was being a mother and homemaker. She loved to decorate, cook, and host family and friends. She taught her family, by example, how to give and help others unconditionally. She taught her family about the love of Jesus and how to treat one another, as well as others.

Special thanks to her caregivers; William (Charlie Chin) Young, Peggy Carpenter, Tia Carter (granddaughter), and Joshua Bailey (great grandson). Also thanks to Aaron Penn (devoted brother-in-law), Ethel Romaine Eaton (a lifetime devoted friend), three loving godsons (Andre' Anthony, Terrence Caldwell, and Marvin Brockman), and Mae P. Carpenter (a loving cousin/sister).

Thank all of you for helping us to celebrate the life of a great woman, wonderful mother/grandmother, and dear friend. A mother handpicked by God.

Special thanks to WFUBMC: Dr. Carolyn Pedley, Dr. Joseph Yeboah, Dr. Sumera Andleeb, Dr. Tyler McQueen, Dr. Phyllis Yeboah, and all doctors, nurses, CNA's, and other staff. We also thank Medi Home Health and Hospice and Trellis Supportive Care: Hospice and Palliative Care. A public viewing will be held Tuesday, June 22, 2021 from 1pm until 5pm at Douthit's. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 23, 2021 at 1pm from Mercy Seat Holy Church. Family will receive friends at 12 noon at the church and interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are in the care of Douthit Funeral Services.
