Edith Carolyn Bess Stewart Wade was born to the late JC & Florene Nash Bess on October 8, 1935 and departed this life on February 10, 2022. She was born in Winston-Salem, NC and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. A high school graduate of Paul L. Dunbar High School, Carolyn returned to North Carolina in her early adulthood and spent her life caring for her loved ones.
Carolyn began her working career as an EKG technician for Forsyth Memorial Hospital. She later was employed with Owens-Illinois and retired in 1997 after 30 years of service. She was a faithful member of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church and later served as First Lady of Lovell's Chapel in Pilot Mountain.
She is preceded in death by her husband Lawrence L. Wade, Sr.; daughters Artelia Johnson & Karen Williams; son in law Alfred Williams; siblings James C. Bess, Jr., Elaine Simmons, Melrose Hall, Robert B. Hall, Willie A. Bess and Celestine Morris.
To cherish her memories, she leaves her sons Rodney (Alice) Bess and J. C. Stewart, a stepdaughter Debra (Earnest) Smith and a son in law Johnny Johnson. She leaves 11 brothers and sisters whom she loved dearly. Carolyn also leaves her beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. A public viewing will be held Thursday February 17, 2022, from 1pm until 5pm at Douthit's. Funeral service will be held Friday February 18, 2022, at 12:00pm from St. Andrews UMC, 1840 Butler Street Winston-Salem and interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at 11:30 am at the church. Arrangements are in the care of Douthit Funeral Services.
