Mrs. Elsie Mae Miller
Affectionately known as Granny, Nana, or Mama, Mrs. Elsie Mae Miller was born on March 23, 1928, to Willie Elcie Pace and Irene Shore Pace. She attended local public schools and entered the workforce as a domestic worker, dedicating her life to caring for others — not just professionally, but most importantly, within her own family.
A lifelong member of Bethlehem AME Zion Church, Elsie Mae was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. Her warm smile and storytelling spirit brought comfort and joy to those around her. She was known for her generous heart, always willing to give the shirt off her back and putting the needs of others above her own. Her helping hands and larger-than-life heart left an unforgettable mark on everyone she ever met. Her presence will be deeply missed throughout the community.
Mrs. Elsie Mae Miller transitioned peacefully in her sleep on May 5, 2025, at her home. She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie Elcie Pace and Irene Shore Pace; her children Frankie (Ted) Pace, Ernestine Hall, Verna Griffin, Bruce Miller, Barbara Jean Smith, and Rother Hunter; and her grandson Nathan Hall.
She leaves to cherish her memory her loving sisters: Burly Bailey, Shirley Phillips, and Connie Inez Thomas. Her legacy continues through her surviving children: Alice Phillips, Theresa Thomas, William (Bill) Miller, Kathy (Kay) Hunter, Robin Hunter, and Calvin Hunter Jr. She is also survived by a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
A special thank you to Theresa Thomas and Kathy Hunter for their devoted care and unwavering love during Elsie Mae's final days. Memorial services will be held Friday May 16, 2025 at 11:00 am from Douthit's. There will be no public viewing. Arrangements are in the care of Douthit Funeral Services.
