James Edward Hayden, Sr. was born on November 13, 1945, in Lancaster County, South Carolina, to the late Desper Hayden and Roxanna Clyburn Hayden. At a young age, he moved to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to live with his grandmother, Ophelia Limus, who provided him a strong and loving Christian home.
James was educated in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County schools, graduating from Atkins High School in 1964. He joined the Army in 1968 and concluded his military career as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserve, retiring in1991.
Outside of the military, James' early career path focused on community service in law enforcement and security. First as a deputy sheriff in the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office, and then in campus security at Winston-Salem State University. His later path was in sales, initially as a car salesman, and later in furniture sales.
He loved life, people and laughter. He made friends at all levels and walks of life. He believed in "American made" and people helping people.
James is survived by his loving children, daughters Beatrice Hunter (Kenneth), of Mebane and Valecia Young of Winston-Salem; a son, James Edward Hayden, Jr. of Winston-Salem; and four grandchildren, Erik, Abigail, Alyssa and Nalani.
Surviving him also is his devoted and supportive sister, Alberta Hayden Mickens, of Winston-Salem, along with a host of extended family and special friends who will cherish his memory.
A private military memorial service will be held at Salisbury National Cemetery on April 2.
