James Lee Carethers Jr. was born on February 10, 1943 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina to Elizabeth Lynch Carethers and James Lee Carethers Sr.
James attended the public schools of Winston-Salem until he graduated from Atkins High School in 1961. He served in the United States Army and was employed by R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. He retired after 37 years of service. He was a faithful member of Beulah Baptist Church.
James was proceeded in death by his parents Elizabeth Carethers and James Lee Carethers Sr. and his brother John W. Carethers. James is survived by his son Michael Carethers, his sisters; Annie Caldwell, Mary (Freddie) Hopkins, Betty Johnson, his brothers Harry (Mae) Carethers, Alphonzo (Veronica) Carethers, Robert (Deatra) Lynch, and a host of other relatives and friends including his devoted friend Peggy Campbell and her family. A public viewing will be held Friday, September 25, 2020 from 2pm until 5pm at Douthit's. A private services will be held Saturday, September 26, 2020.
