Mrs. Jean Tommie Carson Brown, transitioned unexpectedly on Monday, December 5, 2022 in her home surrounded by her daughters and granddaughter. Jean was born August 13, 1937 to the late Tommie Layman and Lillie Mae Carson. She was affectionately known to many as "Wink", "Memall", "Mema", "Mama Brown" and "Mother".
Jean was born and raised in Winston-Salem, NC. She attended Carver High School and Winston-Salem Teachers College (Winston-Salem State University). Jean lived in Los Angeles California for an extended period and received an Associate Science for Transfer (AST) degree in Early Childhood Education from Los Angeles Southwest College before returning back to Winston-Salem.
Jean was a member of Beta Alpha Chapter of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority Incorporated servicing faithfully for many years in different capacities. Jean retired from Forsyth County Department of Social Services after 30 years of service. After retirement, she became a dedicated Substitute Teacher for Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools and committed to Kernersville Elementary School for many years until Covid-19 hit.
Jean was a member of West End Baptist Church which is now known as United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church. She served in several leadership roles in the Senior Missionary Department, United Fellowship and Youth Usher Board, Special Needs Committee, Welcome Committee, and the Barnabus Ministry.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, her late husband, Alfonzo Brown and brother, Larry Carson. She leaves to cherish her precious memories, two daughters, Valaria and Ann Brown of Kernersville NC, one son, Derone (Crystal) Penn of Lexington NC; six grandchildren, Michael (Alena) Coleman of Santa Monica California, Diamond Ann Brown, Tristen Scott-Jacobs, Brandon, Niko and Nadia Penn. Her one great grandson Kameron Coleman; two brothers, Calvin (Arzella) Carson of Winston-Salem NC, Everette (Angela) Carson of Ellenwood, GA and Debra C. Edwards of Winston-Salem NC and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and godchildren. And a special thank you to a dear friend, Ausie Rivens of Charlotte NC, and confidant, Dr. Tiffany Gibson of Kernersville, NC.
Jean enjoyed traveling, watching and attending football and basketball games, gardening her flowers and plants and loved her church hats that took up one entire room in the house. Most importantly she loved spending time with family, friends, and her dogs, Maxx and Coco Brown. A memorial service will be held Friday December 16, 2022, at 11:30am from First Waughtown Baptist Church. The family will receive friend at 11:00am at the church. Arrangements are in the care of Douthit Funeral Services.
