Obituary

Larry Dean Oglesby was born on November 24th, 1961 in Cherokee County, NC to Odell and Henry Mae Oglesby. Larry devoted his life to his family and his community. He was a man of many
talents which was evident in all he did. For over 30 years, he was a staple in the community, known for his reliability, honesty, and resourcefulness. From fixing to building, teaching and coaching others, or sharing a laugh with a friend, Larry's impact on those around him was and always will be undeniable. Filling the large shoes of his late father, Larry continued the legacy of Larry and Odell Cement Contractors–a distinguished and well-known business in the Triad and surrounding areas. His work continues to stand out among the best. Larry was passionate about sports. He was among the most well-known and
respected basketball and football referees for over 25 years; a role that he loved dearly. When he wasn't pouring concrete or refereeing, he was on his motorcycle. He loved to ride and cherished his motorcycle community. He most recently served as President of the Carolina Cruisers Motorcycle Club.
In all that he did, he always made time to show up for his family. He loved spending time at family gatherings; smiling, laughing, and making everyone around feel welcomed. He shared a special and unique relationship with each of his children whom he loved dearly. He instilled lifelong lessons and values in
all of them, always leading by example. While he carried many titles, his favorite was "Papa." His love for his grandchildren was immeasurable. He was a present, engaged, and supportive grandfather, with his love for them knowing no bounds. Larry knew where his help came from. He was a faithful member of Galilee
Missionary Baptist Church for over 45 years, baptized by Reverend Warnie C. Hay. He served in several ministries over the years, including the Media Ministry, Transportation Ministry, Safety Ministry, and Trustee Ministry. Rarely would you arrive at church on Sunday morning without finding a busy Larry,
doing whatever needed to be done to prepare for service. He was indeed an child of God and knew God for himself. Larry was preceded in death by his father, Odell Oglesby, and nephew, Gary "Skooter" Gregg Jr. Those remaining to celebrate and honor his life are his mother, Henry Mae Oglesby; five children, Larry J. Oglesby, Jeremy A. Transou (Charlene), Latitia Oglesby Simmons (Stephen), Lanard Oglesby (Kenesha), and Gabriel Oglesby (Candice); seventeen grandchildren; three great grandchildren; seven siblings, Marie Clayborn (Johnny), Jackie Payton (Dean), Linda Gregg (Gary), Jerome Oglesby (Joan), Johnny Oglesby (Sonya), Jeffery Oglesby, and Robert Ingram; five aunts, Mary Ann Lipscomb, Brenda Oglesby, Leneva Rainey (Sylvester), Debra Oglesby, and Ida Haynes; and a host of nieces, nephews, beloved family, and friend.
