Ms. Luccity D Hemphill

Mother Luccity D. Hemphill Obituary Luccity Davis Downs Hemphill was born on February 19, 1936, in Winston Salem, NC to the late Hannah Davis Downs and Troy Downs. She departed this life on June 29, 2022, after an extended period of illness. Even during her illness, she held fast to her life verse found in Romans 8:31 that states: “What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?” She was educated in the Winston Salem Forsyth County School System where she was an outstanding student at Atkins High School. Ever an industrious worker, she is a two-time retiree from the National Linen Service Corporation in Winston-Salem, NC and Shallowford Farms Popcorn in Yadkinville, NC. Affectionally known as Mother Hemphill, she touched many lives in her life’s journey. She was the epitome of a mother – caring, unselfish, and unwavering in love. Even during her illness, she would talk to her children on their way home after their visits with her. She would not rest until she knew they made it home safely. Mother Hemphill loved her family, her friends, and cherished her church family. Most importantly, she was a beautiful example of what true Christian character and love is all about. She accepted people where they were and always had encouraging words to lift one’s spirit. Early in life Mother Hemphill accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. She was a faithful member of Mars Hill Baptist Church. She graced us with her lovely voice as a member of the Spiritual Choir. After a church transition, she joined Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church and became a member of the O.B. Cook Gospel Choir. When her son, Rev. Hiawatha Hemphill founded Servant’s Heart Worship Center, she proudly became a faithful member. She could be found sitting in her favorite seat each Sunday proudly listening to her Pastor. She was a “Church Worker,” never complaining – just doing whatever she saw that needed to be done. Because of her dedication to her church family, she was unanimously voted “Mother of the Year” for three consecutive years. Mother Hemphill was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Robert Hemphill, and her beloved brothers Tommy and Edward Davis of Winston Salem, NC. She was also preceded in death by her loving brother George Davis and his wife Loretta, both of Atlanta, GA. She is survived by her loving children, Rev. Hiawatha Hemphill of Kernersville, NC and Patricia Hemphill of Winston Salem, NC. She is also survived by her remaining sisters and brothers-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who loved her dearly. A public viewing will be held Friday July 8, 2022, from 1pm until 5pm at Douthit's. Funeral services will be held Saturday July 9, 2022, at 11:30m am from Union Baptist Church and interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at 11:00am at the church. Arrangements are in the care Douthit Funeral Services.
