Mrs. Mary Isabelle Cain Shields transitioned into a peaceful sleep at her home surrounded by family on Friday April 12th, 2024. Mary Shields was born in Winston-Salem North Carolina on June 26th, 1930. She was the youngest of seven children born to William Henry Cain Sr. and Hattie Williams Cain.
She was educated in the Public Schools of Forsyth County graduating from Atkins High School. She was employed with Export Leaf Tobacco Company and retired from Wake Forest Baptist after many years of service. She was a faithful member of Union Baptist Church where she sung on several choirs, the Missionary Board and the Pastor's Aid before her health declined.
She was a Lifetime Member of the Sisters of James H. Young, Memorial Chapter #592.
She is now resting with her father and mother, son, Michael Levon McClinton, granddaughter, Tambra Cain Cunningham, grandson, Marquis McMahan, Sr. (Melissa), Brothers: William Henry Cain, Jr., Julius Cain, Sisters: Annie Cain Jacobs and Ardell Cain Roan, Godson: Marion Canty and devoted niece: Gloria Cain King.
We rejoice in the legacy that she left to continuously grow and manifest in her dear husband and love of her life of 61 years Mr. Theodore Shields, two loving and devoted daughters, Valjean Cain Grant and Brenda Cain Lyons, four devoted sons, Carlyle McClinton, Jr: Quentin Denorris McClinton, Keith Vernard McClinton and Daryl Rayvon Shields of Jacksonville, Florida.
Grandchildren: Marlon Cain, Sr. Nekecha (Gwathney Leak, Jr.), Carla Reid, Carlyle McClinton, III, Angel Wilson, Shekeilah Johnson, Brittany (Mike) Swepson, Robert Rayvon Thomas of Chandler, Arizona and Dallas Drayvon Shields of Jacksonville, Florida. Two sisters: Hattie Jeter of Winston-Salem and Hazel Lyerly of Philadelphia, Pa. Sister-in-law: Louise Shields Hamilton of Charleston, S.C.
She also leaves twenty-three great grands and seventeen great great grands. Several nieces and nephews.
She loved her family. She also was loved by many. As she was called "mommie" she had some very special people that were her bonus children. Mama's presence, her smile, beautiful face and all the love she gave will solely be missed. A public viewing will be held Sunday April 21, 2024, from 1pm until 5pm at Douthit's. Funeral services will be held Monday April 22, 2024, at 1pm from Union Baptist Church and interment will follow in Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends at 12:30pm. Rite will be given by Order of the Eastern Star at 12:15 pm. Arrangements are in the care of Douthit Funeral Services.
