Obituary

Mrs. Mary McCormick Shuler, age 91, of Winston-Salem, peacefully passed away on Friday, April 14, 2023 at dawn. She was born May 10, 1931, in Lancaster, South Carolina to the late Mary McIlwain and Lee Jones and preceded in death by her siblings, Waddell Jones, Johnnie Jones, Ida Lee Pauling, Henry Jones, Essie Jones and Lillie Mae Werts; one son, Anthony McCormick; and one granddaughter, Shameka McCormick.

Mary is survived by so many left to cherish her memories and continue her legacy: one daughter Valerie Wilson; five grandchildren, Shareka (Irvin) Williams, Andriel McCormick, Tasha Love, Jasmine (Steve) Venable, Brandy Love; five great-grandchildren, Capree' Van Eaton, Alexis Van Eaton, Jahari Love, Tristen Love and Serenity Love; and two great-great grandchildren, Christian Van Eaton and Camron Ramey, who lovingly referred to her as Grandma and G-G. She was known as Aunt Mary to her dear nieces Brenda Hairston (deceased), Lindy Harris and other beloved family members. Friends throughout the community referred to her as "Mrs. Shuler and special acknowledgement goes out to Mary's life-long friends, Mabel Wiggins and Vera Shuler.

Mary was a God-fearing woman who valued church, family and community. As a devoted member of New Bethel Baptist Church for 60+ years, she would say, "I served on every committee except the men's choir." which includes Nurses Board, Sunday School Class #5, and the Spiritual Choir to name a few. Mary loved ole' fashion gospel music and was a Songbird for The Forsyth County Baptist Missionary Union for years. Mary always strived for more. She returned to school in her later years and graduated from Forsyth Technical Community College with an associate in arts early childhood education Degree. She had a heart for loving on others, especially children – she became the owner and operator of Mary Shuler's Family Home Daycare where she dedicated 30+ years to rearing 100s of children throughout Forsyth County.

Mary's smile and laughter will be missed, but not forgotten. To honor her love of children, a scholarship fund will be established in her name and memorial contributions of any amount will be appreciated to support her legacy. A public viewing will be held Friday, April 21, 2023, from 1pm-5pm at Douthit's. The family will receive friends at 11:00am Saturday, April 22, 2023, at New Bethel Baptist Church. The funeral service is at 11:30am and the interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are in the care of Douthit Funeral Services.
