MICHAEL TYRONE SCRUGGS was born in Detroit Michigan on November 12, 1950, to Willie and Jimmie Scruggs. He departed this life on August 12, 2022, at 1:55pm. Michael was educated in the Detroit Public Schools. He served four years in the Army branch of military and was honorably discharged in 1971.
As a young man "Mike" excelled in history and was an exceptional athlete. Dominating the basketball court and baseball field. He was also known as the protector of the family no matter where they were. His towering presence gave those he loved a great sense of security. Mike had a knack for Nicknames. He called himself "Scrub-A-Dub", "Detroit", "The Big D", but his favorite was "Big Mike."
Big Mike moved to Winston Salem for a chance at a better life in the summer of 1991. Although he loved and was very proud of his Detroit roots, Winston Salem became home. He was able to learn an electrical trade from his brother-in-law, Halbert Richardson, Sr., a skill he was most proud to have. He joined Greater Faith Chapel Church under the leadership of Pastor John McClurkin and God changed the course of his life. He was a dedicated and active member until death. He participated in the Men's Security Team and was a Special Assistant to his Pastor for years. He loved his church family as his own.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson; Devarian O'Neal, two brothers; Kenneth and Jerry Scruggs. And he leaves to forever cherish his memory his wife; Edith Scruggs, one daughter; Delisa O'Neal, two grandchildren; DeMyia Sims and Joshua Kyerefo, a special godson; Charlie Cato, two sisters; Aminia Baruti and Violet Rochelle Richardson, two nieces; Delisa Stroman and Christina Sherrill, one nephew; Halbert Richardson, Jr., one Aunt; EV Scruggs, a host of cousins and friends, including his Greater Faith Deliverance Church Family. A public viewing will be held Friday August 19, 2022, from 1pm until 5pm at Douthit. Funeral services will be held Saturday August 20, 2022, at 11:30 am from Greater Faith Deliverance Church. The family will receive friend's at 11:00am at the church. Arrangements are in the care of Douthit Funeral Services.
