Lubertha Mae Wilson was born on June 19, 1926 in Summerton, South Carolina to the late Henry and Irene Wilson Ragin- Smith. The family later moved to Winston- Salem, NC where Bertha attended local
schools. She departed to be with her eternal father on Wednesday August 28, 2024 after a brief illness.
She was employed with Winston- State University for over 30 years. After her children left home, she provided housing for students from WSSU taking on the task of mothering these young men & women with
delicious meals on Sundays. She was known for her love of hats and fashion and also famous for her
baking and cooking, especially her cheese straws, Pound Cakes, and German chocolate cakes. Her other love was traveling to visit her children in California and New York where she made lifelong friends.
She also loved attending family reunions in South Carolina. She was a faithful and devoted member of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church for over 50 years serving on the Senior choir, Senior ministry,
and participated in many other activities. She loved her Pastor, Dr. Nathan Scovens and would tell anyone who would listen. Lubertha was the only girl of 3 siblings. Her brothers Robert and her elder brother Henry whom she adored, preceded her in death. She was also proceeded in death by three daughters: Gwendolyn Pickering Scott, Santra Wilson, and Maxine Gibbs. She provided support for her many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren whom she loved dearly and often provided care for them
during summer vacations and offered long term housing for them as needed. She leaves to cherish her memory her son Larry Wilson (Gail) and daughters Marian Wilson- Mcgainey, Geraldine Garbutt of Winston
Salem, and Priscilla Garrett of California. She had very fond memories of her fourteen grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and
friends. A public viewing will be held Tuesday September 3, 2024, from 1pm until 5pm at Douthit's. Funeral services will be held Wednesday September 4, 2024, at 11:30 am from Galilee Missionary Baptist Church and interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at 11:00am. Arrangements are in the care of Douthit Funeral Services.
