Obituary
LaVerne Thompson Hawkins was born November 12, 1944 in Winston-Salem, NC to the late Effie Thompson and Frazier Thompson, their second born. She made her transition to eternal life on April 24, 2026 from Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.Educated in the Winston-Salem Forsyth County public schools. LaVerne worked several part-time jobs during her life. She retired after working part-time at Royal Cake Co. in 1986 cleaning up the main offices.She attended Second Calvary Missionary Baptist Church faithfully all her life but didn’t become a member until she became an adult. Serving as a member of the Pastor’s Aid as the treasurer for many years and the Hospitality Committee while she was able. A gift of cleaning she possessed so anytime she saw something in the church that needed tidying up she would not hesitate to do what was necessary. LaVerne loved the Lord and served Him in her quiet way.LaVerne was a devoted wife, mother and member of Second Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. Watching Wake Forest basketball on TV was something she enjoyed doing with her husband Elmer (but never in the same room). Attending church services and conferences she enjoyed with her only child Almer. Her favorite restaurant was Texas Roadhouse. She would want a salmon dinner with double mash potatoes no gravy almost every week from take out. LaVerne was preceded in death by her parents, Effie T. McCorkle and Frazier Thompson; sisters, Kathleen Kiser (Ellis) and Alfreda Thompson; Brothers, Sheldon Thompson and Freddie Thompson (Donna); mother-in-law, Mattie Hawkins; father-in-law Paul Hawkins; brothers-in-law; Pastor Donald Stowe, Paul and David Hawkins; sister-in-law, Vivian Hawkins. Leaving precious cherished memories that will live on with: Elmer Hawkins her supportive husband of 62 years; dedicated daughter, Almer Hawkins of the home; sister, Swanetta Stowe; sisters-in-law, Brenda Caldwell and Sandra Hawkins; brothers-in-law; Benjamin (Christiana) and Henry (Peggy); host of nieces and nephews including Sonya (Clavoski) Peaks of Wake Forest and Marlon (LaToya) Horne; several great-nieces and great-nephews including Nicholas Peaks of Raleigh; special cousins Lynise Birch and Anna Partlow; god granddaughter, Ilana Birch; friends for over 50 years Lorraine Barringer and Susan Washington; other relatives and friends.
Public Viewing will be at Douthit Funeral Services 1:00 – 5:00pm on Wednesday April 29, 2026. The Homegoing Celebration will be held on Thursday April 30, 2026 at Second Calvary Missionary Baptist Church at 1:00pm. The family will receive family and friends 30 minutes prior to the service. Interment New Hope A.M.E Zion Church cemetery in Lewisville.
