Obituary

Joy T. Sims was born December 13, 1962 to Roosevelt D. Sims and Vernetta C. Sims of Winston-Salem. She proudly told people that she was the 12th child, born 12 days before Christmas.

Joy was preceded in death by her parents and siblings [infant Stanley Sims], Millie Jefferson, Vernon Sims, Allean Sims, Teflon Sims, Patsy Sims. She is survived by siblings Roosevelt Sims Jr., Ether Joe, Stevie Sims, Bennie Sims and Gerard Sims.

She graduated from Reynolds High School and obtained her associates degree from Forsyth Tech Community College. She was a hard & dedicated worker in all of her places of employment and was especially dedicated as a caregiver for her sister Allean for many years. Joy had many monikers: Twanna by her immediate family, Queen Aunt Twanna by many of her nieces and nephews, Joy by her neighbors and friends and Mommie Dearest or J. T. by her daughter Lundon, who she affectionately referred to as Brigette.

While she often stated how proud she was to be a mother, her most lasting impact was that as a Sister in Christ. She continuously gave God the glory for and despite her circumstances. She embodied the meaning of her name JOY and was often the “go to”person for advice, an encouraging word and a hearty laugh. She was the orchestrator of the monthly family group chat, The Robot Dancer & Whistle Blower on the dance floor, self appointed Captain of the 24 ½ Street Neighborhood Watch and the former “Official Caller of Sims Family Bingo”. Her joyful presence will be sorely missed earthside but her lasting impact will live on amongst all of those who she encountered and pointed towards Christ. Philippians 3:20.

EnJOY heaven Mommie Dearest.

Lovingly written by your Brigette.

During this difficult time, we ask that you keep her family and loved ones uplifted in your thoughts and prayers. May God’s peace, strength, and comfort sustain them in the days ahead.
